After his stepping down from a 33-year stint as President, Lankton remains Chairman of Nypro. An active member of the community Lankton opened the Museum of Russian Icons in 2006, housing his personal collection of hundreds of Russian icons. Martin “Marty” Baron has been Editor of The Boston Globe since July 2001. He previously held top editing positions at The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Miami Herald. The Pulitzer Prize for Public Service was awarded in 2003 for a Globe Spotlight Team investigation into clergy sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Mr. Baron previously was executive editor of The Miami Herald. Under his leadership, the newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage in 2001 for its coverage of the raid to recover Elián González.

September 15, 2010 - Teresa Gallinaro - Health Care Reform: Where do we go from here?
Teresa Gallinaro is the Senior Legislative Analyst in the Policy and Government Affairs Department at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care with a focus on legislative and regulatory initiatives in the states of ME and NH, as well as the federal health care reform bill (the Affordable Care Act. Ms. Gallinaro joined Harvard Pilgrim in 2005. Prior to that, she worked in various capacities in the regulatory and government affairs areas at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and Tufts Health Plan from 1993 to 2005 and also worked in the Health Policy Unit at the Massachusetts Division of Insurance from 1988 through 1993.
October 20, 2010 - Attorney David Cogliano - Using Social Media as an HR Tool
Attorney David Cogliano of Davis Malm & D’Agostine will discuss social media as part of the entire employment relationship from pre-employment inquiries to monitoring compliance with post-employment agreements. Employers must fully consider the use and misuse of social media at each stage of the employment relationship. Employers that ignore the risks of social media in the workplace risk legal liability and corporate embarrassment. This presentation will discuss the issues employers should consider in using (or not) social media.
November 17, 2010 - Bill Brennan - Employer Legal Update: ‘Be Aware & Prepare’
Bill Brennan will present on tracking the progress of the Employee Free Choice Act and the impact of ‘new’ pro-labor National Labor Relations Board. Mr. Brennan has over 25 years of Human Resources and Labor Relations experience, offering advice to large companies in various industries: manufacturing, food processing, telecommunications, healthcare, general contracting/construction and transportation. Bill also works with North Central Career Centers of Leominster. Michael Clarkson, Esq. of Morgan, Brown & Joy will also assist in this presentation. He is a member of the South Shore Chamber HR Advisory Board and is a well respected employment law firm based in Boston.
The HRC and the Chamber offer monthly seminars on topics and issues relevant to Human Resource professionals as well as smaller company managers. The HRC events are from noon-1:30PM on Wednesdays at the Chamber. A light lunch is provided. Cost to attend each session is $20 for members $35 for non-members.
The Economic Development Bill, signed into law last week, has many important provisions for area businesses. A key objective in the past legislative session, Chamber staff has worked for months with the area's delegation on the bill. The new law provides for a 2-year extension of permits for development projects stalled by the recession. It requires state agencies to file economic impact statements projecting costs of new regulations to small businesses. The law establishes new expedited permitting for projects in "Gateway Cities", such as Fitchburg and Leominster. It lowers the tax rate to 3% on capital gains earned on investments in Massachusetts-based start-ups. The law extends the period in which a corporation can carry forward its losses to 20 years.
